Three days of public mourning in Tehran ended with a 10‑kilometre procession that the new Iranian leadership wanted the world to see. The spectacle was a mixture of tribute and a clear political message of resistance and revenge.
The coffin carriage, carrying the body of the former Supreme Leader and four family members, moved slowly through streets that were clogged by millions of mourners – one of the largest crowds seen in years. While some were moved by the solemnity, others stayed away, burdened by the ongoing war, an 80% inflation rate, and the shock of last year’s anti‑government protests.
“I’m not going to the funeral,” said one man who avoided the crowded “mookebs” (rescue stations) that offered free food and water. “Many people don’t have work and are so unhappy,” he explained.
Aerial footage of the march showed loyalists chanting the Republic’s slogans – “death to America” and “death to Israel” – as they pressed forward. The atmosphere was charged with vows of revenge: slogans such as “Our revenge is inevitable” and “They will pay” were posted on social media and shouted from the crowd’s foreground.
President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed U.S. claims that the emotions were “fake”, declaring that the tears emerging from the gathering were genuine. The funeral was staged to present the deceased as a transcendent religious and political figure whose influence reached beyond Iran.
Foreign journalists were invited with company limited to the BBC’s Persian Service, and were shown powerful images of the procession, showcasing the dual nature of grief and propaganda. At the same time, government officials reminded visitors to “tell the truth,” reinforcing the narrative of resistance.
The new leadership faces the difficult task of negotiating for sanction relief while keeping the promise of revenge against perceived enemies. Amid this uncertainty, the funeral marked the end of an era for the first generation of Iran’s 1979 revolution and the beginning of a new chapter in its political history.
