But the intense search this week for a suspect in a Brown University shooting that killed two students and wounded nine other people turned the tables on those expectations.

Sweeping surveillance, now found in doorbells, cars and vehicle-tracking cameras, did eventually help track down the whereabouts of Claudio Neves Valente, the 48-year-old former Brown graduate student investigators believe was responsible for the Dec. 13 shooting and another killing two days later of an MIT professor.

It wasn’t until a local Reddit user “blew this case right open” with a tip about a suspicious vehicle that law enforcement was able to link the suspect to the crime. Following an investigation where the suspect evaded authorities for days using clever tactics—including obscuring his face with a mask—police were eventually led to find him deceased in New Hampshire.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha credited the Reddit tipster as vital to the investigation, potentially earning him the $50,000 reward from the FBI for information leading to the capture.

Residents of Providence have praised John, the Reddit tipster, for his quick thinking and vigilance. Unlike past events where online speculation led to false accusations, this instance illustrated how a responsible and helpful contribution can lead to breakthroughs in cases.
