The remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been dumped at a graveyard in Trinidad and Tobago, police say.
The country's police service (TTPS) stated that the bodies were discovered in Cumuto, approximately 40km (25 miles) from Port of Spain, the nation's capital. This alarming finding is part of a preliminary investigation suggesting it may involve the unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses. The connection to gang violence, a significant issue in a region with high murder rates, remains unclear.
Authorities noted that five of the six adults—four men and two women—had identification tags, with two showing signs of prior post-mortem examinations. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro described the discovery as deeply troubling and assured that anyone or institution found to have violated their responsibilities will face full accountability.
A renewed state of emergency granting police additional powers has been in effect since March 2. The US State Department has issued multiple travel advisories for the region, citing crime and a heightened terrorism risk. Although violent crime rates have decreased since 2024 due to security efforts, crime continues to be a significant challenge in Trinidad and Tobago.
