South Korea's beloved musical "Maybe Happy Ending" has celebrated a monumental victory at the Tony Awards, taking home six prestigious trophies, including the coveted Best Musical. The Broadway adaptation of the 2016 South Korean original tells the poignant story of a friendship between two humanoid robots and has resonated with audiences since its debut on Broadway in 2024.
With a total of ten nominations, the production has not only solidified its place on the Broadway stage but has also made history by granting South Korea EGOT status, marking its achievement of winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and now Tony awards.
The show's success can be attributed to the combined efforts of creators Hue Park and Will Aronson, who earned accolades for Best Book of a Musical. Adding to the ensemble's triumph, former "Glee" star Darren Criss, who portrayed one of the robots, celebrated his first-ever Tony win in the Best Lead Actor in a Musical category. The musical's success reflects a growing appreciation for Korean artistry in the international theater landscape, and its achievements are celebrated as a proud moment for South Korea and its cultural exports.
