PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police have renewed their search for the gunman involved in a deadly shooting at Brown University, where two students were killed and nine others injured. This decision comes on the heels of the release of a man who had previously been identified as a person of interest.

Details surrounding the incident remain murky, increasing concerns about the investigation's progress. Authorities indicated that the man’s release during a news conference on Sunday signifies a critical juncture as they now proceed without a known suspect.

Authorities Adress Concerns Over Lack of Evidence

State Attorney General Peter Neronha highlighted the urgency of the situation stating, We have a murderer out there, underscoring the sense of urgency for both the police and the community.

Moment of Chaos

The shooting took place amid final examinations, creating a chaotic environment as students navigated the crisis. Law enforcement reported that over 40 rounds were fired from a 9mm handgun, resulting in widespread panic.

Two handguns and ammunition were located when authorities detained a man at a local hotel, but there are major gaps in security measures as the engineering building where the incident occurred lacked adequate surveillance.

An Urgent Call for Community Support

With the previous person of interest freed, investigators are appealing to the surrounding community to assist by providing any available video footage which could assist in identifying the shooter.

A Student's Perspective

Among the victims, Brown student Mia Tretta expressed her distress, recalling a previous active shooter incident during her years in high school. “No one should ever have to go through one shooting, let alone two,” she remarked, emphasizing the emotional toll of multiple traumatic experiences.

A Grieving Community

The university community is in mourning and reflecting on the tragic events. Brown's esteemed history as one of the oldest higher education institutions in the U.S. is under a shadow as classes and exams are canceled in response to the tragedy.

Community members gathered on Sunday evening in tribute to the victims, turning what was meant to be a festive occasion into a solemn remembrance of the lives lost and impacted by this senseless act of violence.
